What Is Health Care?

Health care, health-care, healthcare, or simply healthcare is the care or enhancement of health through the prevention, identification, investigation, treatment, or recovery of illness, disease, injury, and various mental and physical impairments in humans. Health care providers deliver health care services in a variety of settings. In short-term health care settings such as hospitals, community-based organizations, home health agencies, long-term care facilities, hospices and nursing-care centers, primary care physicians, emergency rooms, clinics, and insurance companies provide routine, preventive, and acute care. Long-term care facilities are for patients who require specialized therapeutic services to maintain their health and facilitate independence.

The essential health benefits provided under health care coverage are medical services and treatments not covered by any other public insurance. A public insurance that may be required by law to cover prescribed drugs, hospitals, laboratories, and doctors of a particular specialty are called Medicare. An individual’s health care coverage is determined by a number of factors, including the type of insurance (i.e., private health insurance, government health insurance, group health insurance, etc. ), the health of the patient, his or her dependents (children, dependents), his or her current income and assets, the length of time he or she has been receiving health care, the expected duration of his or her disability, his or her expected retirement age, etc.

A primary health care system provides the primary health services and treatment. The services covered by a primary health system include hospital admissions, surgical operations, outpatient department visits, and laboratory services. A primary health system may also include coverage for extended health care services such as prescription drug coverage and extended treatment programs. A primary care physician provides overall primary care and directs the primary patient to specialists when needed. When a patient has no one to rely on, he or she may turn to the secondary health system.

A hospital stays, sometimes called acute care, is the formal admission into a hospital of a severely ill patient for treatment that has been scheduled for a period of time longer than six weeks. Staying in a hospital does not imply admission to a longer-term facility. In acute care, the patient remains in the hospital for the prescribed period of time, usually three to ten days, after which he or she is discharged. The duration of a stay in a hospital other than an acute care facility may be up to a month, although the actual length of stay will vary depending on the illness and the condition of the patient.

A primary care clinic or primary care facility is one such place where people receive medical services without involving the use of hospitals. These clinics may not be formally admitted as hospitals. They offer all the services offered by a primary health care center and more, such as covering the costs of extended health care, dental care, home health aide services, psychotherapy, diagnostic testing, medication, therapy, and prevention services. They also focus on well-being, meaning that they try to promote self-care as much as possible. A primary care clinic can offer more comprehensive coverage than the hospital could, in terms of preventive care and the management of substance abuse and related problems.

Health insurance programs have made health care coverage available even to patients who do not have private primary care providers. This means that a person who has a chronic condition, like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, kidney disease, or other serious health conditions, can get coverage for his or her visits to physicians, specialists, and nurses at a general practitioner. However, this type of coverage comes with restrictions, such as payment rates and the amount of time a patient is allowed to be admitted in the hospital. Such limitations are imposed to ensure proper cost containment of health care costs and encourage patients and their families to make healthy lifestyle choices.
