Skin Care Routines

Skin care is an array of practices that support healthy skin appearance, improve its health and alleviate skin disorders. Skin care includes a combination of medical and non-medical practices which are aimed at maintaining the skin and its functions in the most effective manner possible. Skin care also includes prevention of skin disorders, application of cosmetics and proper usage of emollients. It also includes practices for enhancement of aesthetic appearance, protection and maintenance of skin, assessment of skin disorders and management of problems associated with the skin.

Skin care includes a wide variety of approaches which address different issues like cleansing, maintenance, treatment and prevention of acne. Cleansing is an essential step towards achieving a healthy skin. This is achieved by thorough cleansing of the face, including exfoliation and removal of dead skin cells. The skin-cleansing regimen should include a pH balance, proper use of skin care products, the use of abrasive materials and the removal of products that may be irritating. Skin-care products such as soaps, creams and gels, facial wash, masks and moisturizers, are designed to effectively cleanse the skin and maintain it in a healthy condition.

The skin care product should contain mild cleansers and should not cause irritation. There are four main types of cleansing oils which include alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids and lactic acid. Alpha-hydroxy acids are most suitable for exfoliating while those for lactic acid work best for maintenance of skin moisture. A cleansing oil must be mixed with a carrier oil such as purified water to form a thin paste.

Another important aspect of good skin care and prevention of skin disorders lies in sun protection. This also encompasses protection from the effects of the sun on other parts of the body. The use of sun protection can either be done topically or in a daily moisturizer cream. It is best that you choose a moisturizer with SPF15 or more. Products that have a high level of alcohol content should be avoided since they may only remove the natural oils from the face and will not help to prevent damage. Sun protection creams should also be used together with the use of a good sunscreen and when doing sunbathing remember to wear protective clothing such as a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and protective gloves.

Skin problems such as acne, wrinkles, rosacea and blackheads are best treated by skin care specialists. There are different treatment options available depending on how serious the problem is. For minor skin problems, over-the-counter skin treatments such as benzoyl peroxide are usually effective. Specialists may also advise the use of salicylic acid, which helps to get rid of dead skin cells that are clogging pores.

A skin-care routine should always begin with cleansing. This needs to be done twice a day and products containing special herbs like neem oil are best for this purpose. After cleansing, exfoliation should be done using products that have ingredients that promote cell turnover so that the new cells will be replaced easily. Combination skincare is another way to maintain the health and appearance of the skin.
